Mittelburgenland DAC
Fruity, spicy - unmistakably Blaufränkisch
The Regional Wine Committee Burgenland established the official concept of regional origin, “Mittelburgenland DAC”, in May of 2006. Mittelburgenland was already well-known for its long tradition of the cultivation of the grape variety Blaufränkisch. The specialization on Austria’s most important red wine variety gained the region the affectionate nickname “Blaufränkischland”. It was only a logical consequence that the fruity, spicy Blaufränkisch became officially defined as the typical regional wine. The 2005 vintage was the first to be marketed under the official designation of regional origin “Mittelburgenland DAC”.
How is a Mittelburgenland DAC wine recognized?
“Mittelburgenland DAC” appears on the label and the capsule and is the guarantee for the typical fruity, spicy flavour of a classic Blaufränkisch wine.
How does a wine become a “Mittelburgenland DAC”?
The Blaufränkisch grapes for this wine must be sourced exclusively from the demarcated wine region of Mittelburgenland. The wine must fulfil the criteria for an Austrian quality wine and federal inspection number as well as be tasted and deemed to fit the defined sensory profile of a typical Blaufränkisch of the region. All other wines that do not fit this profile and wines that are made from a variety other than Blaufränkisch can be marketed as quality wines from the origin of Burgenland.
How does Mittelburgenland DAC taste?
The traditional, typical regional Blaufränkisch exhibits an intense, deep ruby red colour. Its complex bouquet unites the aromas of blackberry and dark cherry with spicy components reminiscent of wild herbs and mint. When matured in new small oak barrels, the smoky aromas are perfectly integrated in the deep and complex flavours of Blaufränkisch. The pronounced fruit is highlighted by a balanced play of acidity in the mouth. The finish of this Blaufränkisch is distinguished by a marked and juicy core of tannin. The grape variety possesses impressive potential for aging. Both the classic and the single vineyard wines offer optimal drinking pleasure within their first five years.
